It was born out of the internet messageboard 4chan, a forum popular with hackers and gamers. Q Have they done this before? A Yes. It is believed the WikiLeaks operation is an extension of “Operation Payback,” which involved cyber attacks on the websites of the Motion Picture Association of America, Recording Industry Association of America and others over their vigorous copyright protection efforts. On Saturday, they took down PayPal’s blog, ThePayPalBlog.com,for at least eight hours. Q What do they do? A They organize a “Denial of Service” attack on targetted websites, forcing them offline. Q How do they do it? A They typically use botnets, or armies of computers that have been enslaved by criminal hackers, to bring down a website by hitting it with an overwhelming number of simultaneous requests for information. The group used Twitter to seek supporters, referring them to its website where they could download the software that turns a Windows or MacPC into a weapon against the Master-Card site. Q How big are they? A Difficult to judge. A spokesman told the Guardian they were about a thousand strong, but other hackers could flock to their ranks.
