NATO is investigating claims by a group of computer hackers that they have breached its security and accessed large hordes of classified material. The hacking collective AnonymousIRC has already posted two documents, marked restricted, online. A Twitter account was used to make the claim by the collective. It said: “Yes, NATO was breached. And we have lots of restricted material. With some simple injection. In the next days, wait for interesting data. “We are sitting on about one gigabyte of data from NATO now, most of which we cannot publish as it would be irresponsible. But Oh NATO….” AnonymousIRC posted links to two documents it claims to have in its possession: One is a 2007 “NATO restricted” report about communication systems used by ISAF forces in Afghanistan. The second, dated 2008 is on the same subject but relates to Kosovo. An international group of hackers and activists is said to be behind AnonymousIRC. It — and a splinter group called LulzSec — have been the target of an international police investigation resulting in more than 60 arrests in the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey. On Tuesday more than 20 suspects were detained in international raids targeting Anonymous, including a 16-year-old boy from south London.
